Saving the Blue-throated Macaw in Bolivia

Two Ways to Donate ~

1.  Sponsor a Nido Adoptivo NEST BOX on the Laney Rickman Reserve

Now accepting Sponsorships for the 2021 - 2022 breeding season! $250 per nest box

Laney Rickman, founder of Bird Endowment, developed Nido Adoptivo™ in 2007 in partnership with Asociación Armonía to raise funds to build nest boxes for Blue-throated Macaws after a successful pilot project in Bolivia. Your sponsorship covers the cost of materials to build the nest boxes and supports field work to locate and establish appropriate nesting areas where wild breeding pairs will accept the artificial nest boxes.

Since the program’s inception, an incredible 93 Blue-throated Macaws have fledged from the nest boxes, mainly on the Laney Rickman Reserve. With only an estimated 350 - 450 adult Blue-throated Macaws in the wild, this number of successful fledges is truly significant and holds promise for future population growth of this critically endangered bird.  For the first time, in 2017, a second-generation chick was raised by parents who both fledged from these nest boxes. In 2020, seven former nest-box fledglings used the nest boxes as adults to breed, indicating that the birds feel safe to come back to breed.

In 2018, Armonía named the Laney Rickman Reserve in her honor when the property was acquired (formerly a cattle ranch) recognizing Laney for her dedicated efforts "Saving the Blues." The new Reserve protects this vitally important land, the main breeding grounds for southern subpopulation for the Blue-throated Macaw and secures the long-term potential of the nest box program.

To honor Laney Rickman’s legacy and continue her dedicated efforts saving this critically endangered species from extinction, the Bird Endowment, Asociación Armonía, American Bird Conservancy and Laney's family partnered to establish the “Laney Rickman Blue-throated Macaw Fund” in September 2017. This Fund is managed by American Bird Conservancy, a 501(c)(3) organization with all disbursements sent directly to Asociación Armonía in Bolivia. Through the generosity and support of a remarkable number of people around the world, more than 250,000 USD have been raised to date. Donations provide vital long-term support for the Nido Adoptivo™ nest box program as well as habitat conservation and reserve management to help save the Blue-throated Macaw and the unique ecosystem in which it lives.

In August 2018, the nesting area for the largest known group of breeding Blue-throated Macaws was protected as a nature preserve, the Laney Rickman Blue-throated Macaw Reserve. A former cattle ranch, the land was purchased by Asociación Armonía with support from American Bird Conservancy, the International Conservation Fund of Canada, IUCN Netherlands, and the World Land Trust. ABC’s President Michael Parr attributes this new Reserve as one of the biggest conservation wins for birds in 2018.

Thanks to your donations, the

Blue-throated Macaw is flying toward a brighter future!
