Going PINK to Save the BLUES!

11/10/2021: Lion Country Safari, an AZA-accredited facility located in sunny South Florida, raised over $1,600 benefiting Bird Endowment with a clever fundraising idea. Tina Cloutier Barbour, PhD is the Curator of Conservation at Lion Country Safari and shared with us about their "pink fla-mingle" experience. Lion Country Safari regularly welcomes groups of visitors to mingle with the flamingos that call the park home. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience that delights and inspires those who partake in it. And that’s no accident—the team is very deliberate about the messaging associated with these guided tours.

While guests mingle with the beautiful PINK birds, staff cheerfully point out that they are also helping to “Save the BLUES.” Lion Country Safari sets aside a portion of the proceeds from every fla-mingle experience to the Bird Endowment (or the Laney Rickman Blue-throated Macaw Fund). The team was inspired to support Blue-throated Macaw conservation efforts by one of their own: Kaneda, a beautiful Blue-throated Macaw, pictured below. These birds are critically endangered in the wild and, thanks to Kaneda and the flamingo residents being such valuable and engaging ambassadors for their species, staff and guests alike are moved to “Save the BLUES!”
